The Fall Equinox often brings us back to the idea of balance — equal light and darkness, summer giving way to autumn, one season meeting another.
But this year, I keep coming back to something slightly different.
The Fall Equinox is a crossing point. A threshold.
On September 22, 2026, at approximately 8:05 p.m. EDT, the Sun crosses the celestial equator, marking the astronomical beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. At that same moment, in tropical astrology, the Sun enters 0° Libra and Libra season begins.
We don’t remain suspended between seasons.
We cross from one into the next.

The Equinox Is Already Moving
Interestingly, day and night aren’t actually perfectly equal on the equinox.
Because of how sunrise and sunset are measured, along with the bending of sunlight through Earth’s atmosphere, we still experience slightly more than 12 hours of daylight. The closest day to a true 12/12 split comes a few days later.
Even nature’s great symbol of balance isn’t perfectly still.
It is already shifting.
Maybe balance doesn’t always mean keeping everything even.
Sometimes it means recognizing when it is time to move.
The Astrology: A Cardinal Turning Point
The Sun enters 0° Libra at the equinox, one of the four cardinal points of the zodiac.
Cardinal energy initiates. It marks a change in direction.
So while Libra is often associated with balance and harmony, its beginning is actually a turning point.
There is another beautiful piece in the astrology this year.
Just before the equinox, Mercury in Libra formed a sextile with Jupiter in Leo — an aspect often associated with wider perspective, bigger thinking and looking beyond what is immediately in front of us.
And that brings us directly to the tarot card that came forward.
Three of Wands: Look Toward What Comes Next
My guiding card for this Fall Equinox is the Three of Wands.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith imagery, the figure stands looking outward toward the horizon.
Something has already begun.
He isn’t asking whether to take the first step.
He has taken it.
Now he is looking toward what comes next.
That feels like the heart of this equinox.
Something has shifted. Something has grown. Something may even have run its course.
The question becomes:
Where do I go from here?
King of Cups: How We Cross
The second card I pulled was the King of Cups.
He feels deeply, but he isn’t ruled by every emotion that moves through him.
He reminds us that we don’t need to rush into the next season.
We can cross this threshold with awareness.
What still belongs with us?
What truly matters?
And what are we carrying simply because we haven’t stopped long enough to put it down?
The Three of Wands looks toward the horizon.
The King of Cups reminds us to know ourselves before deciding what comes with us.
But There Were Three Cards Before These…
Interestingly, my original pull was:
Three of Swords.
Page of Swords.
Seven of Swords.
At first, they felt heavier than the energy I wanted for an equinox reading.
But perhaps they show us what is standing on this side of the threshold.
The Three of Swords asks us to acknowledge what has hurt.
The Page of Swords asks us to look again and question the stories we’ve been telling ourselves.
And the Seven of Swords asks:
What am I avoiding?
Not every hurt needs another chapter.
Not every thought deserves to come with us.
Sometimes crossing a threshold begins with recognizing what we have been carrying.
Libra Season Has More Depth This Year
As the Sun enters Libra, Venus — ruler of Libra — is travelling through Scorpio.
That adds another layer.
Scorpio isn’t interested in keeping things pleasant simply for appearances.
It wants truth.
So perhaps this Libra season isn’t only asking:
Where do I need more balance?
Maybe it is asking:
What is genuinely worth bringing into balance — and what am I ready to release?
The days following the equinox continue that story, with the Libra Sun moving into aspects with Neptune, Pluto and Uranus, followed by an Aries Full Moon on September 26.
That brings forward themes of truth, transformation, change and the relationship between self and others.
This equinox doesn’t feel especially still.
It feels like movement.
Fall Equinox Reflection Prompts
- What has grown in my life this season?
- What can I see now that I couldn’t see before?
- What am I standing on the edge of?
- What old thought, hurt or story does not need to cross this threshold with me?
- What deserves my energy in the season ahead?
- If I trusted myself, what would I choose to carry forward?
The Threshold
The Fall Equinox doesn’t ask the light and darkness to remain perfectly equal.
The moment arrives.
The Sun crosses the line.
And the season changes.
Maybe we don’t need everything balanced before we move forward.
Maybe we don’t need every answer.
Sometimes we simply need to recognize that we’ve reached a threshold — and consciously decide how we want to cross it.
The Three of Wands asks us to lift our eyes and look toward what comes next.
The King of Cups reminds us to move forward grounded, aware and emotionally honest.
And those first three Swords leave us with one final question:
Does this still need to come with me?
The season is changing.
