On the night of August 27 into August 28, 2026, the Full Moon in Pisces arrives with a dramatic partial lunar eclipse.

And this one we really can see here in southern Ontario.

The eclipse begins subtly around 9:23 p.m., becomes noticeably partial around 10:33 p.m., and reaches its deepest point at approximately 12:12 a.m. Nearly the entire Moon will move into Earth’s dark shadow, creating beautiful copper, rust and reddish tones.

But the astrology behind it may be even more interesting.

A Pisces Full Moon: Surrender Meets Reality

This lunar eclipse falls in Pisces, opposite the Sun in Virgo.

Virgo asks:

What can I fix? What can I organize? What can I make better?

Pisces asks:

What if this isn’t mine to fix?

Full Moons are often described as times to “release what no longer serves you.” But this eclipse feels more specific:

What are you trying to solve that might actually need to be surrendered?

Sometimes clarity isn’t another answer.

Sometimes it’s realizing you don’t need to keep carrying the question.

First We Entered the Moon’s Shadow. Now It Enters Ours.

Here’s one of my favourite details of this eclipse season.

During the August 12 solar eclipse, the Moon moved between Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow toward Earth.

Now the positions reverse.

During this lunar eclipse, Earth moves between the Sun and Moon — and Earth’s shadow falls across the Moon.

Symbolically:

First we entered the Moon’s shadow.
Now the Moon enters ours.

The Leo Solar Eclipse asked us to consider who we’re becoming.

This Pisces Lunar Eclipse asks:

What don’t you need to take with you?

Why the Moon May Turn Red

During a lunar eclipse, sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the Moon. Much of the blue light is scattered while more red and orange light makes it through, giving the eclipsed Moon its copper colour.

In a beautiful sense, the Moon is being illuminated by light filtered through our atmosphere.

Perhaps there’s a message there too.

We all see life through what we’ve experienced — relationships, disappointments, successes, grief, love and lessons.

The question isn’t whether your past has changed you.

It’s:

What wisdom do you keep, and what weight can you finally put down?

Almost — But Not Quite — Total

This eclipse comes incredibly close to totality, with nearly the entire Moon entering Earth’s darkest shadow.

Yet a small sliver remains illuminated.

I love the symbolism in that:

You can let something go without losing the light it gave you.

Tarot Guidance: The Empress, Seven of Cups & Three of Pentacles

The three cards guiding this eclipse tell a beautiful story:

The Empress → Seven of Cups → Three of Pentacles

The Empress — Honour What Has Grown

The Empress represents creation, abundance and growth.

But perhaps she isn’t asking us to create more. She’s asking us to recognize what has already grown.

Something may no longer need constant pushing, proving or tending.

What have you grown that you’re finally ready to trust?

Seven of Cups — Clear the Fog

This card couldn’t feel more appropriate for a Pisces eclipse.

Dreams. Possibilities. Intuition. Imagination.

But also confusion, projection and too many choices.

Not every thought is truth. Not every possibility is your path. Not every feeling requires action.

What becomes clear when you stop entertaining every possibility?

Three of Pentacles — Build What Is Real

And then we come back down to Earth.

Where is your time useful? Who belongs beside you? What deserves your effort?

After the watery possibilities of the Seven of Cups, the Three of Pentacles brings us beautifully back to Virgo’s practical wisdom.

Together, these cards tell us:

Honour what has grown. Clear the fog. Build what is real.

A Little Numerology: The Double Three

There’s another interesting detail hiding in these cards.

The Empress is card III of the Major Arcana, and our reading ends with the Three of Pentacles.

The Seven of Cups is sitting between two 3s.

In tarot and numerology, 3 is connected with creation, growth, expression and bringing something into form.

The Empress shows us what has grown.
The Seven of Cups asks us to sort through the possibilities.
The Three of Pentacles asks us what we’re actually going to build.

Perhaps this eclipse isn’t simply about letting go.

It’s about clearing enough space for what deserves to grow next.

And Then the Six of Wands Appeared Again

One card made another appearance: the Six of Wands.

Interestingly, this was also one of our guiding cards for the August 12 Leo Solar Eclipse.

Then, its message was:

Where are you ready to stop shrinking?

Two weeks later, perhaps its message has evolved:

You allowed yourself to be seen. Now decide what deserves your energy.

Pisces Lunar Eclipse Tarot Guidance for Each Element

Fire Signs — Aries, Leo & Sagittarius

Ace of Wands

Your fire is valuable. Stop spending it everywhere.

Ask yourself: What still deserves my energy?

Earth Signs — Taurus, Virgo & Capricorn

Eight of Pentacles

Focus on what works. Consistent effort in the right place matters more than trying to manage everything.

Ask yourself: Where is my effort producing something worthwhile?

Air Signs — Gemini, Libra & Aquarius

Queen of Swords

Clear thinking matters now. Separate facts from assumptions and intuition from fear.

Ask yourself: What becomes obvious when I clear the noise?

Water Signs — Cancer, Scorpio & Pisces

Eight of Cups

Sometimes loving something doesn’t mean you have to carry it forever.

The Eight of Cups is knowing when something has given you what it came to give.

Ask yourself: What am I ready to leave with gratitude rather than regret?

A Final Eclipse Reflection

This Pisces Lunar Eclipse doesn’t ask you to release everything.

It asks you to become more discerning about what deserves to keep growing.

Keep the wisdom.
Keep the love.
Keep the part that changed you.

But perhaps you don’t need to keep carrying the weight.

Honour what has grown. Clear the fog. Build what is real.

Sometimes returning to yourself means recognizing what was never yours to carry forever.
